RPC Story #23 CONTINUED
’67 Oct 1 NAS Kingsville/Beeville, Tx First time jet flying school F- somethings. Short 2 weeks with about 10 hops required to get jet qualified. Meaning you could take the G- forces and not pass-out and/or blow lunch in your oxygen mask. Not much of a test since I could tell at this time looking back that I was not at all comfortable in this environment and at this time did not know what to do about it. I flew back to ohio and drove to Georgia.

’67 Nov 1 NAS Glynco Brunswick, Ga Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) School (Dropped by order of wing commander) This training was to be the culmination of my training that started to be formulated the July weekend in ‘66 that I flew to Chicago Naval Air Station Glenview for Navy pilot testing. Flunked the eye exam and scored too low for the Navy so the Marine recruiter offered me a shot at the same thing but only with the Marines. So after some good ground and air hops I became disinterested and made an air down. Got sick and was off flight schedule for a week. Moved back a class to a bunch of guys that I did not know and who had no interest in helping me get motivated. Got my second air down and was out of the program or dropped. Not a good feeling but may have worked out for the best since flying was not for me. My brain just did not work that fast. After waiting for my new orders back to Quantico and The Basic School I worked for the base commander as the Officer In Charge of the detail that visited families in this area of Georgia that had lost Marines in Viet Nam and give the news and offer assistance to the family. Not good duty. Made 1st Lieutenant here as standard procedure for all the guys in my OCS class. Drove back to Ohio for some leave and then on to Quantico for a summer of fun and some training hell.

’69 Oct 5 USS Comstock 30 daysHere is a photo of USS Comstock (LSD 45 Class). I crossed the Pacific from Qua Viet River harbor near DMZ to Camp Pendleton harbor in southern California via Okinawa for a refueling at White Beach on the original USS Comstock (LSD 19 Class). We were bringing home my 3rd Marines Battalion flags in October 1969 with some of my short personnel and big guns, vehicles, equipment, etc. Spent 32 days on the water that included watches on the con. I was the Marine embarkation officer with school MOS and only one other Marine officer on board was a major. 6+ hrs shore liberty on Okinawa was great, but the rest of the trip sucked the big one.
